KUALA LUMPUR: A visual communications student, Sashtri Vivekanandan, 21, beat all comers to win the top prize in the Samsung Corby Colour Me challenge.

His winning entry focused on designs that were connected to street arts, or as most people would call it, graffiti.

“I got my inspiration from street arts. For this entry, I started to experiment with design elements such as circles, arrows and splatters,” said the first year student of Raffles International College.

Impressed by Sashtri’s work, Samsung Malaysia Electronics Sdn Bhd plans to incorporate his design on its new range of Corby mobile phones.

The design would be sold as a limited edition model and is expected to be available in April.

For his efforts, Sashtri walked away with a Samsung Corby S3653 touchscreen phone, RM3,000 in cash, and a room paint makeover by Nippon Paint.

Sashtri will also have the chance to bring his design to life on a wall of Rumah Sayangan, an orphanage in Cheras. The contest was organised by Samsung Malaysia Electronics and Nippon Paint (M) Sdn Bhd.

The aim of the contest was to encourage students to express their individuality and personality through art. Students were tasked to design a back cover for the S3653 touchscreen phone based on its key features.

The S3653 has a 2.8in TFT touchscreen and can be used as an MP3 player and video playback device.

It also has a 2-megapixel camera with smile detection.

The mobile phone retails at RM699.
